Max Lieberman

Review, 2009

On his travels through India, Sydney artist Max Lieberman was taken with the charmingly direct hand-painted street signs. He has adopted the same directness in his latest still-life paintings. Lieberman puts together quirky collections of objects: the most eye catching is the large-scale Catharsis, which features everything from a calculator and shaving brush to a halved avocado and a line of briefcases. Catharsis is on canvas while other works such as the rustic, Four Objects on Yellow (pictured), have been directly painted onto a recycled slab of timber. There’s also a trio of fuzzily romantic landscapes of Italy, Israel and Egypt that show the softer side of Lieberman.
