Max Lieberman

Review, June 2003

Lieberman’s Paintings are filled with vigour and profundity. They contain simple subjects – fish lying on a plate, a vase, a ball, a selection of objects from an artist’s studio – yet each work is far from naïve. Shadow accentuates form in Lemon and Red Box an unseen light source catches a lemon’s outline, suggesting a half-lit moon. Confident brushwork and Lieberman’s observant eye are particularly evident in Lemon, Fish and Knife and Three Fish on Plate, in which dead fish lie in a pearly light against a background of muted browns and purples. The simple forms of Paintbrush and Bowl are elegant and expressive while the paintbrush, pen, notebook and fruit of Studio Objects and Orange are infused with glowing colour.
